Gangwon 201 — 26.65-meter Fisheries Patrol Vessel

Dual MJP 500X Waterjets

Gangwon 201 MJP 500X

Commissioned for Gangwon Province in northeastern South Korea, Gangwon 201 pushed the boundaries of patrol vessel design. This project delivered a vessel that marks a new era for fishery enforcement operations. Powered by dual MJP 500X waterjets paired with MTU engines, the ”Gangwon 201” combines operational flexibility, high performance, and unmatched maneuverability.

Vessel information

The ‘’Gangwon 201’’ was built with the mission of protecting Gangwon Province’s waters from illegal fishing activities. To best achieve this, the project focused on delivering a patrol vessel capable of rapid response and controlled operations in equal measures.

The vessel measures 26.65 meters in overall length with a 22.5-meter beam and a maximum draft of 2.3 meters. This design, combined with waterjet propulsion, supports shallow-water access while maintaining performance and maneuverability under urgency and pressure.

The propulsion system features dual MJP 500X waterjets paired with MTU engines in an innovative hybrid-electric configuration. This allows clean electric operation when patrolling harbors, cutting emissions while improving control. The build not only met the project’s goals but exceeded them.

Despite the vessel’s robust construction and intended use in harsh conditions, it achieved a sea trial speed of 19.5 knots. This result highlights the efficiency and capability of Marine Jet Power’s most advanced waterjets, the MJP X-Series.

MJP 500X

The MJP X-Series, launched in 2018, is the most advanced waterjet line in Marine Jet Power’s portfolio. With a fully integrated, single-piece design, it simplifies installation for builders and improves efficiency for the end-user.

In 2021, MJP expanded the X-Series to include the 400, 450, and now the powerful 500 size. The 500X is made from duplex stainless steel, making it stronger, lighter, more corrosion-resistant, and more efficient.

Paired with an optimized mixed-flow pump, the 500X reaches speeds above 50 knots. However, speed isn’t its only strength. The redesigned cast aluminum reversing bucket and improved intake offer superior stopping power and precision maneuvering.

Why the MJP 500X?

The ‘’Gangwon 201’’ required a propulsion solution for fast, agile, and shallow-water operations, and MJP 500X waterjets provided the perfect match. With unmatched performance and reliability delivered by the dual 500X, the vessel is able to handle military-like patrol duties while maintaining precise control and flexibility.

Vigor

The U.S. Army awarded Vigor the contract to build its new generation landing craft in the fall of 2017. The design for the MSV(L) was developed in partnership with BMT following a detailed study of the Army’s unique needs and the available design options fulfill those needs. It dramatically improves the current LCM-8 and provides the optimal combination of performance, operational flexibility and life-cycle cost while maintaining the reliability and versatility of the Army’s current craft. The contract calls for one prototype vessel, four vessels under low rate production, and up to thirty two additional vessels over ten years for use by Army Mariners in even the most difficult environments.

The landing craft’s tribow monohull is an innovative yet deceptively simple design that provides superior maneuverability and stability in high sea states, through the littorals and within inland waterways in support of land-based operations. MSV(L) is a natural evolution of the BMT Caimen-90®, leveraging more than a decade of extensively-tested performance and adapted by the Vigor-BMT team to meet U.S. Army requirements.

Featuring triple MJP 750 DRB waterjets.

This 44-meter long guardian is more than just beautiful; it’s a marvel of modern maritime technology. Effebi, a renowned Italian shipyard, poured its decades of experience into crafting this Coastal Patrol Vessel (CPV). But what truly sets the “Tenente Petrucci” apart is its innovative propulsion system – four mighty MJP 650 CSU waterjets.

Unlike propellers which rotate to create thrust through friction with the water, waterjets employ a pump-jet design principle. Water is drawn in through an intake and channeled into an impeller. The impeller, akin to a centrifugal pump, imparts significant velocity to the water stream. This high-speed flow is then directed through a carefully designed nozzle, converting the kinetic energy of the water into a forceful thrust that propels the vessel forward. This translates to several advantages.

Stealth wave-piercing trimaran carbon fast attack craft (DNVGL Patrol Boat) KRI Golok (688) built by PT Lundin Industry Invest (also known as North Sea Boats) was recently launched featuring quad MJP 550 CSU waterjets. The fast attack craft (FAC) employs a modern “Wave Piercing” trimaran design. This allows the vessel to cut-through waves rather than rise up and over them, and the increased beam provides inherent stability. This combination of features reduces both pitching and rolling, creating a stable weapons platform, and enabling the vessel to comfortably and safely maintain higher average speeds in adverse conditions.
