Shaldag Mk V
Dual Marine Jet Power 650 CSU

In 2021, Israel Shipyards Ltd. received a key contract to supply nine fast patrol gunboats to the Philippine Navy. Based on the Shaldag Mk V design, these vessels, domestically known as Acero-class gunboats, form part of the Horizon Two modernization program. Technology transfer allowed local assembly at Cavite Naval Base, boosting the country’s shipbuilding capabilities.
To meet mission demands for speed, maneuverability, and shallow-water operations, the shipyard selected Marine Jet Power’s 650 CSU waterjets. Paired with twin MTU 16V 4000 M70 engines, this propulsion system delivered a perfect match for high-performance naval missions.
Vessel information
The Acero-class patrol boats are tailored for the Philippine Navy’s Littoral Combat Force. They replace aging patrol boats and expand operational reach beyond the country’s internal waters. Each boat measures 32.65 meters long with a 6.20-meter beam and displaces around 95 tons.
A shallow 1.25-meter draught allows beach access and operations close to shore. These boats can cruise 1,000 nautical miles at 12 knots and hit top speeds above 40 knots. Radar, GPS, and naval communication systems enable over-the-horizon missions.
Deployed across high-risk zones like the South China Sea and Mindanao, five of the vessels carry Rafael Spike NLOS missiles. All nine feature lightweight, aluminum hulls and compact layouts to support fast response. Each vessel runs with a 10-person crew trained for multiple roles.
Agile handling and rapid deployment make these gunboats critical assets in maritime defense. They support patrols, intercepts, humanitarian missions, and tactical operations with a powerful mix of speed and precision.

Marine Jet Power 650 CSU
Each Acero-class gunboat is powered by a dual MJP 650 CSU waterjet configuration, integrated with twin MTU 16V 4000 M70 engines. The Compact Steering Unit (CSU) is designed for installations where split-duct buckets cannot fit, with a classic reversing bucket layout that allows close center-to-center jet placement.
Engineered for tight maneuvering and fast response, the 650 CSU features a mixed-flow, high-efficiency pump and offers optional intake materials including composite, steel, or aluminum. Its duplex stainless steel construction provides double the strength and corrosion resistance of standard materials, making it ideal for long-term operation in tropical marine environments.
Why the MJP 650 CSU?
Naval operations demand speed, precision, and endurance. The MJP 650 CSU delivers all three. Its compact design integrates seamlessly into the narrow hull of the Shaldag Mk V, enabling exceptional agility and tight turning radius, crucial for intercept missions, patrols, and quick-response actions in coastal zones.
Furthermore, the CSU’s robust stainless steel body resists corrosion and physical wear in challenging marine environments. Combined with flexible intake configurations and superior thrust control, this waterjet system supports the vessel’s full mission profile, from fast attack to humanitarian assistance, without compromise.
