Extra X99 Fast — Mini K2 by Extra Yachts

Dual MJP 550 DRB waterjets

Extra X99 Fast Mini K2

Mini K2 is the first unit of the Extra X99 Fast by Extra Yachts, part of ISA Yachts and the Palumbo Superyachts Group.

Designed for the American market, the Extra X99 Fast made its first public appearance at the 2024 Palm Beach International Boat Show. The X99 Fast centers around high performance without sacrificing interior space or onboard comfort. With twin MAN V12-2000 engines and dual MJP 550 DRB waterjets, it offers thrilling and equally enjoyable round-trip cruises from Florida to the Bahamas.

Vessel information

Stretching 30.17 meters, the Extra X99 Fast brings together power and intelligent design. The naval architecture from Palumbo Superyachts features a planing hull made from composite and carbon fiber. Paired with twin 2,000 hp MAN V12-2000 combined and dual MJP 550 DRB waterjets, Mini K2 delivers a top speed of 37 knots. However, with the triple drive option, the X99 Fast reaches a top speed of 44 knots.

The distinctive exterior lines come from the drawing board of the Italian design studio, Guida Design. The focal point of the exterior design is the stern, which offers 75 square meters across three social spaces, including the beach area, lounge, and dining space, all sloping seamlessly to the sea. The concept centers on reconnecting guests with nature and the ocean through open, flowing spaces.

Lightweight construction plays a big role in performance. Composite materials dominate the structure, while the interior also utilizes lightweight materials to minimize weight. As a result, the X99 Fast achieves a displacement of approximately 100 tons at full load and a gross tonnage of 168 GT, contributing to a shallow draft of just 1.35 meters.

MJP DRB

MJP 550 DRB

The X99 Fast features dual Marine Jet Power (MJP) 550 DRB waterjets. The DRB, or Double Reversing Bucket system, is designed for control, responsiveness, and low noise, both above and below the surface.

Furthermore, the 550 DRB stands harsh conditions. Its body and pump are made of duplex stainless steel, and the intake is available in steel, metal, or composite. The inboard hydraulic setup and optimized pump design offer powerful thrust and accurate reversing speeds.

Why the MJP 550 DRB?

The dual MJP 550 DRB waterjet setup perfectly matches the X99 Fast’s mission, providing unmatched performance and maneuverability. Additionally, in combination with the 1.4-meter draft, the flush-mounted waterjets allow Mini K2 to explore the shallow waters and hidden beaches that define yachting in the Bahamas and other coastal destinations.

Gangwon 201 — 26.65-meter Fisheries Patrol Vessel

Dual MJP 500X Waterjets

Gangwon 201 MJP 500X

Commissioned for Gangwon Province in northeastern South Korea, Gangwon 201 pushed the boundaries of patrol vessel design. This project delivered a vessel that marks a new era for fishery enforcement operations. Powered by dual MJP 500X waterjets paired with MTU engines, the ”Gangwon 201” combines operational flexibility, high performance, and unmatched maneuverability.

Vessel information

The ‘’Gangwon 201’’ was built with the mission of protecting Gangwon Province’s waters from illegal fishing activities. To best achieve this, the project focused on delivering a patrol vessel capable of rapid response and controlled operations in equal measures.

The vessel measures 26.65 meters in overall length with a 22.5-meter beam and a maximum draft of 2.3 meters. This design, combined with waterjet propulsion, supports shallow-water access while maintaining performance and maneuverability under urgency and pressure.

The propulsion system features dual MJP 500X waterjets paired with MTU engines in an innovative hybrid-electric configuration. This allows clean electric operation when patrolling harbors, cutting emissions while improving control. The build not only met the project’s goals but exceeded them.

Despite the vessel’s robust construction and intended use in harsh conditions, it achieved a sea trial speed of 19.5 knots. This result highlights the efficiency and capability of Marine Jet Power’s most advanced waterjets, the MJP X-Series.

MJP 500X

The MJP X-Series, launched in 2018, is the most advanced waterjet line in Marine Jet Power’s portfolio. With a fully integrated, single-piece design, it simplifies installation for builders and improves efficiency for the end-user.

In 2021, MJP expanded the X-Series to include the 400, 450, and now the powerful 500 size. The 500X is made from duplex stainless steel, making it stronger, lighter, more corrosion-resistant, and more efficient.

Paired with an optimized mixed-flow pump, the 500X reaches speeds above 50 knots. However, speed isn’t its only strength. The redesigned cast aluminum reversing bucket and improved intake offer superior stopping power and precision maneuvering.

Why the MJP 500X?

The ‘’Gangwon 201’’ required a propulsion solution for fast, agile, and shallow-water operations, and MJP 500X waterjets provided the perfect match. With unmatched performance and reliability delivered by the dual 500X, the vessel is able to handle military-like patrol duties while maintaining precise control and flexibility.

Chatham Area Transit Hybrid Passenger Ferries

Marine Jet Power Ultrajet 305

Chatham Area Transit Hybrid Passenger Ferry

In June 2024, Derecktor Shipyards New York made history by launching two hybrid passenger ferries for Chatham Area Transit in Savannah, Georgia. The introduction of The Juliette Gordon Low II and The Susie King Taylor II, as the first hybrid passenger ferries in the U.S. powered by waterjet propulsion, represented a significant milestone for the shipyard and marked an important step in the evolution of urban marine transportation.

These ferries, built to support Chatham Area Transit’s expanding network, operate between City Hall, Trade Center, and Waving Girl Landing.

Vessel information

Each ferry measures 65 feet and features an aluminum catamaran hull, each carrying up to 149 passengers per trip. Both vessels rely on dual MJP Ultrajet 305 waterjets, a BAE Systems HybriGen Power system, and two Cummins 6.7L Marine Diesel Engines with HDS 200 ISG generators to meet performance and sustainability goals. These systems charge the 308 kWh XALT lithium-ion battery packs, ensuring reduced emissions without compromising power or performance.

The serial hybrid system optimizes power distribution, improving efficiency while lowering environmental impact. Combined with the advantages of waterjets, these features enhance maneuverability, fuel efficiency, and shallow-water access.

MJP Ultrajet 305

MJP Ultrajet 305 waterjets were selected for their shallow-water capability and precise maneuverability. This was essential for frequent docking and shifting currents in Savannah’s waterways. More importantly, these waterjets integrate seamlessly with hybrid-electric propulsion, making them an ideal fit for the project.

The Ultrajet 305 features a proven pump design, with over 15,000 units in service worldwide. Built from aluminum, the body, pump, and intake withstand debris-filled waters. They also deliver 214 kg of thrust, ensuring durability and high performance even in challenging conditions.

Why the Ultrajet 305?

Frequent docking and unpredictable currents demanded a propulsion system with precise control and shallow-water adaptability. The MJP Ultrajet 305 met these challenges while also supporting hybrid-electric integration.

Erik Derecktor of Derecktor Shipyards New York highlighted the project’s importance: “Building these hybrid waterjet ferries for Chatham Area Transit allowed us to further solidify our position as a leader in this evolving field.” Marine Jet Power is proud that our waterjets played a crucial role in this sustainability-driven project and contributed to an important step in the evolution of urban marine transportation.
